There are so many different styles of photography and so many types of equipment and techniques. This is one of the things that makes photography such an art. You always hear that a pictures says a 1000 words, but a great picture will stir your emotions. Look at pictures you really love that other photographers have taken. Think about what makes those pictures so wonderful. Is the lighting dramatic? Is it the colors, or the way the subject flows through the frame? Perhaps it is the subject itself that is just caught at the right moment in time from a perfect angle.

What I always tell people is that there are a few basic things that you can do to turn your photos from ordinary to wow. At first they may seem a little odd, but I will give some examples to explain my point of view.

  1. Don't be afraid to crop out parts of your subject. Whether it be a person, or a landscape, or a flower, your shot can become dramatic when you get inside your shot.

  2. Pick the appropriate angle to capture the feeling you want to show. Especially with people, a high angle can make the person look small where as a lower angle can make them look larger than life. This is very important with children.

  3. Force your flash to fire when the main light is behind your subject. It does not matter if it is a bright sunny day or not, your flash can make a major difference between an amazing shot and a crappy one. This is commonly referred to as "Fill Flash".

  4. Avoid putting your main subject in the centre of the frame. This is commonly referred to as "The Rule of Thirds". You can look that up on the net if you like, but suffice it to say your shot will be way more impressive if your subject is not directly in the centre of the picture.
